ANTONY & THE JOHNSONS…Cut The World LP

After listening to Antony’s album I Am A Bird Now the thought crossed my mind that it was the most beautiful thing I had ever heard. After hearing Antony perform with an orchestra at the Perth Concert Hall on the same world tour that this LP was recorded it occurred to me that he was the best singer I had ever heard. I felt grateful to have lived to experience someone able to perform such emotionally rich songs at such a sustained level of perfection. It was life affirming seeing someone with a unique and important talent, although for all intents and purposes a complete outsider, find their place, being comfortable in their own skin and being appreciated by an oft ungrateful world. It is impossible to imagine art and life any better than this.

TULLY…Sea Of Joy OST LP

To begin, one wonders why, given the predilection in recent years to unearth every prog and psych obscurity, every vanity pressing often with rarity trumping musical value, has it taken so long for anyone to re-release this justifiably desired LP. Amongst the hushed and reverential musings on this once lost classic were rumours that the original tapes were lost in a warehouse fire.

Over their 3 LPs Tully appeared as much a hippy collective as a band and their cosmic consciousness saw them blend elements of progressive rock, folk and jazz into a music both of its time and timeless. The crystal purity of Shayna Stewart’s vocal and the keyboard sounds of Michael Carlos make them unique among their contemporaries (the closest point of reference is probably Tamam Shud) and that is not to discount the sonic perfection of the acoustic and electric guitar parts to be savoured here. And while Sea Of Joy sounds quite unlike any other LP of its day it also sounds different from any other Tully LP. It’s more experimental, as if making music for a film has facilitated more creative reign. Everything tried works.

Some soundtracks work freestanding as they are a pleasing collection of pop songs. Some work because the sounds on the record evoke memories of the film. It is a testament to the quality of music found on Sea Of Joy that after several decades the LP works as its own head trip with a breaking wave of organic sounds that somehow leave the listener purified after the experience. And to think… this sublime masterpiece of folk/psych might not even be their best album.
